The Preservation and Restoration of the House of Culture in Runik

The Preservation and Restoration of the House of Culture in Runik

"A GIFT FROM THE PAST" Project Task: Conservation and adaptation of the House of Culture Award: Second place The revitalization of the old building of the Cultural Center in Runik is based on the fusion of the effort to preserve authenticity and adapt to new needs with minimalist interventions. Vision: The Cultural Center in Runik will be transformed into a vibrant and inclusive space that preserves and enriches cultural heritage, creating a platform for cultural and artistic activities. This transformation aims to balance the preservation of historical authenticity with new functional and social needs, ensuring sustainability and permanent use. The intervention in the external environments will be based on the principles of Landscape Minimalism. Executive Summary of the Concept: The process began with historical research to understand the importance of the building and to document its current condition, identifying areas that require intervention. Implementation is based on the conservation principles, that features minimal interventions, reversibility, and material compatibility. The proposed design preserves the authenticity of the original elements and adds contemporary components to meet new needs, including the adaptive use of spaces and landscape minimalism for a clean and functional aesthetic. Community involvement is essential, creating open spaces for everyone and offering educational and cultural activities that encourage social interactivity. The exterior includes the outdoor amphitheater, spaces without permanent destination, landscape and decorative elements, and easy access to public transport.

    EYEGLASSES, SERIES: ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

    EYEGLASSES, SERIES: ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

01 CEDRIC PRICE One of architecture's apparent paradoxes is that some of its most influential thinkers build very few buildings. Cedric Price, completed relatively little and never ran a large office, but his influence - through drawings, proposals, teaching and conversation - remains enormous. Price’s architectural style came from his belief that buildings should serve the needs of the people, and be radically transformed or demolished if they no longer served their purpose. A life-long socialist, Price was deeply sceptical of political institutions and their tendency to use grand, monumental buildings as a means of consolidating power. Instead, Price proposed building temporary and mutable structures which would be open and accessible to all. 02 GRUPPO9999 The movement, first known as anti-design or counter-design, then defined as radical architecture by Germano Celant, had its driving force in Florence in the sixties. The 9999 Group condemned the misuse of the mass media and the false goals of the economic-political run-up attentive only to the logic of the market and consumption, promoting an ecological movement where each of their design activities contained an ethical message. They launched a proclamation which, in addition to highlighting the group’s philosophy, aimed to outline a specific life model and to spread it. 03 PETER COOK As a founder member of the visionary group Archigram in the early 1960s, Peter Cook helped to project radically new possibilities for architecture.Archigram mixed Pop Art’s fascination with found objects with emerging technical possibilities to imagine an architecture where the necessary guts of a building determined its imagery. With the flamboyance of a showman, Cook turns his fascination with “the puzzlement of the strange thing” into spectacles. 04 SUPERSTUDIO Superstudio was a radical group, founded in Florence in 1966-67, which, in those years of protest, posited a conceptual and iconoclastic praxis of architecture. Through photomontages, furniture prototypes, films and writings with provocative overtones, the group developed a critique of the Anglo-Saxon Pop culture. 05 THE UFOS The UFOs, a group founded in 1967 in the wake of student protest within the Faculty of Architecture of Florence by Lapo Binazzi, Riccardo Foresi, Titti Maschietto, Carlo Bachi and Patrizia Cammeo, intends to make architecture spectacular in an attempt to transform it into event, urban and environmental 'guerrilla' action. 06 VICTOR PAPANEK Most influential pioneers of a socially and ecologically oriented approach to design beginning in the 1960s Papanek called design “the conscious and intuitive effort to impose [adapt to] meaningful order”. Design is composing an epic poem, executing a mural, painting a masterpiece, writing a concerto. But design is also cleaning and reorganizing a desk drawer, pulling an impacted tooth, baking an apple, choosing sides for a backlot baseball game, and educating a child.
